Representation Theory, SAUSSURE

Ferdinand de Saussure was born in Geneva, Switzerland on the 26th November 1857. He argued that the meaning of a story/video is created by the creation and interpretation of signs.

SEMIOTICS
-How meaning is created and understood by people to who the media is being communicated to. Representations are constructed through signs which signify a meaning.
-Semiotics can also relate to how symbols such as letters and numbers create meaning.
-The term semiotic originates from the greek work 'semeiotics', which means interpreter of signs.
-They can be polysemic meaning they have more then one meaning.

SIGNS AND SIGNIFIER
-What is used to create the meaning, the object itself.
-It refers to the meaning the object creates.
-Saussure discovered this theory in university and it has gone on to influence other anthropology and sociology work.
